IPX kernel

Has anyone had any luck with getting IPX to work over the PPP connection without a VPN setup?
What I'm gathering is one would need to build the kernel with IPX support and set the ppp_options to comment out noipx, then install an ipx daemon like ipxripd.
I'm very new to Linux, so this might be fairly simple (like adding a line to Kconfig?) but I'm also absolutely out of my depth. And maybe this won't even work at all. Any pointers would be appreciated. I'm poking at the info in the Compiling uboot.img thread, but am still pretty lost.
Thanks in advance!
