I feel like I've tried every combination of suggestions, my hd is powering on, however when I switch to usb, no files are being found. I've renamed.the directories everything under the sun still getting nothing. Any clues here?

What are you trying to do then?

If you're trying to run cores from the HDD then you probably got the file structure wrong.
If you're trying to run the games from the HDD then don't switch to USB, most if not all cores detect the games on your HDD if you've got the right file structure.

If you're unsure on how the files / directories should be ordered then take a look on your SD card, it should be present when you've installed MiSTer for the first time.
