USB Hub Ports Not Working

Hello all,

I’m new to Mister... mine came pre-assembled from the previous owner and was working fine until this morning. It came with the original PSU, which I read does not have enough « juice » to power both the main board and the USB hub... Since this morning, the Mister boots up just fine, but the keyboard and controller no longer respond. When I attach a mouse, the laser sensor of the mouse does light up, indicating that there is energy enough in the USB port to power it. The thing that troubles me the most is that the red and green lights keep flashing (alternating pattern), which I don’t think happened before. I have ordered a new PSU with 9V, 5A, to try to fix the problem, but while I’m anxiously waiting for it to arrive I wonder if something is wrong with the main board or the USB hub... any thoughts? :(

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,

If you have tried too run the mister/usb board with a 9v powersupply there is a good chance that you cooked something!
The mister/usb board should have a 5V powersupply.
Or is it simply a typo?

So I am assuming you are using the MiSTer USB board with your setup.

The stock PSU that comes with the DE 10 Nano often do not provide enough amps to power additional USB devices.

And it depends on what you all have plugged into your USB board, one game pad and a USB thumb drive might not cause issue;
but if you got a USB Game pad, a USB laptop Hard drive, a USB Wifi Dongle, and a USB Bluetooth Dongle will often be too much for the stock PSU.

I recommend ether a 3amp or 4 amp PSU.
TRIAD MAGNETICS make a good 5 volt 4 Amp PSU

Its the same what Zero himself sells on Esty.

https://misterfpga.co.uk/ also sells a good alternative

Further more, if you don't mind using adapters or splicing the cable, PSUs for the Raspberry Pi 4 (5 volts 3 amps) aren't bad as well.
I like the models with the built in power switch in the cord, like the NorthPada brand on Amazon.

Keep in mind what ever you get for a PSU, the DE 10 Nano and the MiSTer USB board both use a Center positive polarity and Barrel Plug sized 2.1mm I.D. x 5.5mm O.D.

Thanks, guys!

It was indeed a typo, I did order a 5V/4A PSU specifically recommended for a MiSTer with the USB hub. Indeed, I have the built-in, 7-port USB hub attached.

What I’m concerned the most with is the alternating pattern of flashing LEDs (red and green), is that an error message of some sort? (couldn’t find it anywhere in MiSTer documentation sites).

Thanks again!

Question do you have an 8-Bitdo controller plugged in? If so unplug it and reboot the MiSTer and see if it fixes things. You should see lights on the hub board what happens if you just have one device plugged in?

I would also suggest the Mean Well over the Triad Magnetics one you suggested, solely because the Operating temperature range of the Triad Magnetics PSU is significantly lower at 40c (104f) vs the Mean Well at 70c (158f). If someone has this in a home theater console and it gets warm in there, it could potentially overheat (which means it could wear out sooner), but it's not a major thing.
