Why doesn't Mega CD / Sega CD core have cheats?

According to the MiSTer wiki, packs of codes can be downloaded from https://gamehacking.org/. Most cores that support cheats already have cheats implemented. However, the MegaCD core doesn't seem to have any cheat support. As you can see from the Game Hacking site's Sega CD section, there are cheats for many games: https://gamehacking.org/system/scd/all

The wiki for the MegaCD core doesn't mention that it doesn't support cheats either. TurboGrafx CD has cheat support by placing the cheats within the folder for the respective game. Can the Sega CD have this same capability?

P.S. Atari 2600 also has cheats for a few games: https://gamehacking.org/system/a26/all

the Sega/Mega CD core can use cheats but not the same way as the other console cores
The cheats need to be zipped individually and place inside the folder of the game the cheat is for

Got it. I downloaded cheats from the site in MiSTer format which was a lot easier to do than I anticipated. Thanks!

EDIT: Just noticed someone else replied while I was writing it up, but whatever, I'll keep it up in case anyone else needs to know.

It does have cheats capability. I don't know how they have it setup to handle the file structure, but I would guess you place the cheats files in /media/fat/cheats/ just like the other cores have. Here's the commit when cheats support was added.

https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MegaCD_ ... 74ab92bbe4

Was added back on May 3 of 2020.

I'm going to test this out now, here's what I've done, using Sonic CD (USA) unzipped which matches this redump --> http://redump.org/disc/29188/:

1. Made a folder in /media/fat/cheats/ named "MegaCD"

2. Downloaded the MiSTer Format zip of the Sonic CD (USA) cheats from gamehacking.org that you linked.

3. Copied that Zip to the new cheats folder for MegaCD (AKA: "/media/fat/cheats/MegaCD/Sonic CD (USA).zip")

4. This didn't work, so let's try in the same folder as the game itself, making sure the zip file of the cheats has the same name as the cue file and the folder name....

5. That worked!

Here's your solution then. Download the zip for the cheats and place them in the folder for your game. If you are zipping your games I would bet that would cause a problem, as the game probably has to have the same name for it. Make sure you are downloading the MiSTer version of the cheats from their site.
