Working versions of TOS

Unread post by GaiusIuliusCaesar »

I am setting up the ST core and a question about tos.img
Specifically what TOS versions are supported by the core, and is there software compatibility issues with any specific version(s)?
Grew up with a Amiga so don't know much about the ST.
Thanks

I think they all are, but be aware that the computer's refresh rate is tied to the OS, so you will need two TOS image: a 60hz, American one, and a 50hz, European one.

The ST(E) tos are all working, but depending of the machine you want to use (simulate) you've better to chose the right tos for a compatibility point of view. Same as for Amiga you have different Kickstarts from the 1.1 to 3.1.4

Regarding the Atari ST here are the versions

Version..../.... Date....../......Computer
...1.0...../.... 20.11.1985.......ST
..1.02..../.... 22.04.1987.......STF, Mega ST
..1.04..../.... 06.04.1989.......STFM / STacy (Portable)
..1.06(60).../.29.07.1989.......STE
..1.62..../.... 01.01.1990 .......STE
..2.05..../.... 05.12.1990 .......Mega STE
..2.06..../.... 14.11.1991.......Mega STE

The STE tos can manage the blitter while the 1.02 not for instance (they are much more enhancements but rarely used back in the day by the games/apps), the STE came too late in regard to what the Amiga was already capable to do, but this is another story :-).
I'd say for games let's stick to the 1.04 (with 512kb or 1mb ram) unless they are STE games where the 1.62 will be the one (with blitter on and from 512kb till 4mb; HDD etc...).
At least it is what I'm doing on my side.
The ST core can handle several configurations so you can create the combination you want, save them and recall them at any time.
The ST core is amazing (like the real computer) especially for MIDI stuffs, but not only :-)

For some CPU heavy games try 2.06 because the Mega STE could run with 16 MHz instead of 8. Robocop 3 for example benefits from the higher clock speed. The 16 MHz had to be applied via software. There are hardware installations for most of the games that had a launcher that tells you when a game benefits from the 16 MHz and gives you the possibility to switch to 16 MHz..
