INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE when installing Windows NT 4

Unread post by tenyuhuang »

Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows NT 4.0 on the AO486 core; I'm not sure if it's supported at all, but the specs sure fits its minimum requirements.

So far I've tried a few approaches to get it installed:
(1) Booting from the NT 4.0 SP1 CD -> 0xc0000034 error;
(2) Installing from MS-DOS using I386\WINNT.EXE -> INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE after restarted;
(3) Preparing a VHD with Virtualbox, and stop right after the first restart, mount it onto AO486 -> INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

From the look of it (and some educated guess), Windows NT is missing the driver to access the HDD itself - and I'm looking for some advice to make it work past this step.

Thanks in advance!

Probably the same thing that prevents OS/2 from working. The IDE system on ao486 is... not great. May be that ao486 is just wedging the bios routine to the VHD handler, so anything that expects/needs there to be an /actual/ IDE controller doesn't work.
I don't really know, but that's what it seems like to me. DOS works. OS/2, NT, BSD, etc do not work. :(
