Does anyone know what this setting does and what the various options (SNES1, SNES2, SD2SNES, FF) mean? All I could figure out is that it might refers to working RAM.

Some of the SNES models will have different RAM initialization garbage data. The setting helps certain games function more accurately.
The same thing needs implementation the NES/Famicom core, because certain games need that initial garbage data, like Final Fantasy, to have it's random battle encounters accurate to real hardware. Terminator 2: Judgement day also does the same thing with it's copyright screen, which gets skipped, because of non accurate RAM initialization.
