Using SSD drives on an unpowered USB hub?

Unread post by advert2021 »

I'm reposting some of this from reddit, but I have some questions regarding the micro USB port on the DE10 nano board. There are a few so I'll just list them in case anyone knows the answers

1. Can you run an SSD off of an unpowered USB hub without issue? Do you have personal experience of doing this?
2. What is the maximum current draw the micro USB can support?
3. Will running an SSD off of an unpowered hub reduce the lifespan of the DE10 by introducing extra strain on components?
4. Will running an SSD off of a powered or unpowered hub impact other devices connected to that hub? e.g. introduce lag etc.?
5. Can you use any powered USB hub or is there the potential for some to damage the DE10 nano?

Thanks!

Best to get the official USB hub - very neat & then don't have to worry about current draw from peripherals - upgrade from the OEM PSU though

Official hub+new PSU is 3-4 times more expensive than an external one and I doubt it is any different regarding power.
