Any config required for SNAC to work?

Hey all,
I recently purchased a SNAC converter plus a handful of SNAC adapters from misteraddons.com and I'm having trouble getting them working.
I figured they would just automagically work in supported cores, but so far this evening I have been unable to get my SNES and NES controllers to work with their respective cores. I've tried three different original SNES controllers and two different NES controllers with no luck.
Is there any setup required for SNAC to function, or is it supposed to be basically plug and play once a game is launched? If anyone has thoughts as to what I should look at to troubleshoot this, I'd be extremely grateful.
