I have a problem when using the spectrum core with direct video enabled - i get a distortion close to the top of the screen. How can I fix this?

More details would help: what TV you're connecting to, what cable, what's in your ini, etc...

all I have done is set the line in the ini to directvideo=1 all the other cores are fine, the zx spectrum has a distortion on the top of the screen like its out of sync. i have a standard hdmi to vga dongle and a standard Mister VGA to Scart cable direct into my Sony CRT.

I have a similar setup and the display is fine. You can compare (or use) my mister.ini, and make sure you haven't changed something in the OSD core settings (though even with different permutations the display stays ok on mine).

And, there's no "standard" cable, unfortunately It can be problematic too, though I only had issues with other cores because of that, never the ZX.

I have just compared and it is mostly the same - or at least the lines to do with video are.

Try enabling/disabling composite_sync. I remember the same behaviour when I used Direct Video.
