How does the "Joysticks" Expansion Work?

In the C64 core configuration, my setup has "Joysticks" as the Expansion set, how does this work?
The C64 has a number of joystick expander adapters, so I'm wondering which one (if any) of the ones it will work like?
Specifically I'm trying to see if I can play "IK+ Gold" with three players. The options there are:
- 8x-SNES-Pad-Adapter (by Ninja/The Dreams)
- Protovision-Adapter
- Digital Excess & Hitmen-Adapter
Also, is there any documentation on this "4 joysticks mode" anywhere?

Trying to scan the source a bit, and I'm a bit confused as to whether this "Expansion" option configures a virtual C64 expansion, or whether it's related to the (Not-USB-but-)UserPort on the MiSTer?
I'd be happy to contribute some documentation updates for the core if I could get to the bottom of how this works, as either my search-fu is very bad, or it seems to be a bit sparsely covered at the moment?

So you're saying that if I connect the joysticks to the MiSTer, enable "Joysticks" as the Expansion, and select "Protovision" in IK+ Gold, it should all work?
I'll try once more

I'll try once more penalty kick online
Have you solve this issue?

No, I haven't gotten three-player to work for IK+ Gold yet, haven't tried in a while though.
