Best way to connect with LCD monitor
Best way to connect with LCD monitor
Hi!,
I bought a used Dell P1914s monitor to use with my MiSTer.
Its an IPS, 5:4 19 inch 1280 x 1024 monitor. Quite nice.
Which is the best way to connect it to my MiSTer ?
It has as video input:
DisplayPort
VGA
DVI-D
How can I get the best video quality ? My MiSTer setup has a 6.0 IO board.
Should I simply use a VGA to VGA cable? (using the IO board), or a HDMI to DVI cable? or a HDMI to VGA adapter?
I want to use all the new stuff (adaptive scanlines, shadow mask, 64-phase filters)
Thank you for any help.
Cheers!

HDMI to DVI, no question. You will need to extract audio via the IO board.
You will also need to change the video mode to the appropriate resolution in MiSTer.ini .

Re: Best way to connect with LCD monitor
Definitely. I'm using a "Monoprice DVI-D Single Link Male to HDMI Female adapter". Make sure to get a correct one as far as pins vs holes. There are also HDMI-DVI cables, but I preferred to get an adapter so I can use different lengths of HDMI cable depending on the setup/location.
As an example, my ini file for the Dell 2007FP (1600x1200) - you can rename to MiSTer.ini if you want to make it your main ini file. Modify video_mode - try video_mode=4 which is one of the standard modes, 1280x1024@60. If that doesn't work, you'll need to search or post on the forums to find a correct video_mode line to use.
For audio:
- If your MiSTer has analog audio out (3.5mm) (via analog IO board), use that directly if you like
- If it only has optical out, you can use speakers with built-in optical inputs (Vanatoo etc), use a receiver/amp with optical in, or a powered optical to analog converter
- I haven't done this but you can also try splitting out the audio from HDMI using an HDMI audio splitter box (Monoprice etc). For this to work, you'd need to change this ini setting to 0:
Code: Select all
; set to 1 for DVI mode. Audio won't be transmitted through HDMI in DVI mode.
dvi_mode=1

Thank you very much for the answers
I bought this cable:

As soon as it arrives, I will test the settings.

Re: Best way to connect with LCD monitor
I have a similar problem with my old Eizo Flexscan L768 monitor. Monitor supports max. 1280x1024 @60hz resolution.
I can't manage to display anything on it with my mister setup.
Hope that someone is using this setup and can help me out with the mister.ini settings. As the Eizo is relatively old it has no HDMI input.
Therefore I've connected the HDMI output of my mister to the Eizo using a HDMI to DVI adapter similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MJDYH21/
In the mister.ini config, I enabled dvi mode and selected following video_mode as follows:
But somehow I don't get any picture. Isn't this a supported setup? Or do I need a specific hdmi to dvi adapter?
Already used another hdmi cable, without succes.
Any help would be appreciated.

Cable and settings look ok. You could try testing the cable/adapter by connecting some other device to the hdmi cable (modern console, scaler, camera etc) and see if you can get any output on the monitor.ercan1441@gmail.com wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 1:08 pm I have a similar problem with my old Eizo Flexscan L768 monitor. At the bottom of this ini are a lot of core-specific video modes - might be worth trying some of them as the default video mode:

Re: Best way to connect with LCD monitor
Tested with my PC with hdmi out to same monitor, but this works fine, so the hdmi to dvi adapter seems to work fine.

Re: Best way to connect with LCD monitor
Tried same mister config and hw setup with another Dell monitor with same hdmi to dvi adapter. No problem at all. So it must be the combination related to this specific Eizo L768 monitor.
Re: Best way to connect with LCD monitor
I can offer two ideas:
1. Check if vsync_adjust is set to 0 in the mister.ini
2. Try a custom modeline. I tried to different generators for 1280x1024@60 and got:

Re: Best way to connect with LCD monitor
Suggested settings don't work either. Must be some kind of a limitation or a maybe even a defect of the used Eizo monitor.
For example, with:
the OSD of the monitor keeps complaining about:
Similar with video_mode=1280,80,136,216,1024,1,3,32,108880 I get:
For example, with:
Code: Select all
dvi_mode=1
vsync_adjust=0
video_mode=1280,32,432,32,1024,21,10,21,114980
Code: Select all
fD: 0.0 MHz <==== this is red and blinks, which is weird!
fH: 64.8KHz
fV: 60.2Hz
Code: Select all
fD: 0.0 MHz <==== this is red and blinks, which is weird!
fH: 63.6KHz
fV: 60.0Hz
