Apple II analog joystick - diagonals?

Apple II analog joystick - diagonals?
In Karateka, I can move left and right, and I can stand up (and bow), but when I try to run (stand/up + upper-right), I go right back into a fighting stance. Any clues on what I may be doing wrong?
