Can You Rename Console Core or Will That Cause Issues?

I often spend too much time scrolling thru the console cores menu looking for the one I'm after because I forget exactly how mister names it. So, if I were to change the names of the folders in the "games" folder would it mess things up?
I'd like to rename things like:
Sega Genesis / Mega Drive
Sega Master System
Sega CD
Sega 32x
Sega Game Gear
Nintendo NES
Nintendo SNES
You get the idea
And if I do it and it does work, would update all just change it back to default?

You can create a text file called "names.txt", put it in SD card's root directory and fill it with custom names for cores. On the next boot MiSTer will automatically grab names from this list and use them instead of default names.
Cores should listed one per line, followed by a colon, space and custom name (core: New name). For example your provided list should be formatted as such.
Code: Select all
Genesis: Sega Genesis / Mega Drive
SMS: Sega Master System
MegaCD: Sega CD
S32X: Sega 32x
Game Gear: Sega Game Gear
NES: Nintendo NES
SNES: Nintendo SNES

If I am not mistaken you can do it automatically using the update all script and enabling Names TXT in the settings.

I'd definitely try telling update_all to use names.txt; that may fix the problem right there. You'll get English core names instead of computer-ish core names.
If you still don't like the naming, you can use the favorites script to create shortcuts off the main menu, and you can call those anything you like. I've normally used it to link directly to specific ROMs, but I think you can just link to a core instead.
But try names.txt first. That'll probably make you happy.
