Tempest 2000 joystick support

Hello,
I am trying to play Tempest 2000 with a joystick.
Tempest 2000 requires at least 3 buttons ( fire, zap and jump) but there is no way to use the third button even if I choose 4-buttons joystick from OSD menu. It only recognize 2 buttons.
If I choose the Gravis Pro gamepad in the OSD menu, the game starts to push buttons casually, probably because it doesn't support it.
On the OSD menu I assigned all the buttons for the core offcourse
The last thing I can do is trying to install the gravis gamepad pro drivers ( the ones for the PS1 like controller) but the game should work directly with a standard 4 buttons gamepad....
Anyone can help?

I have never tried playing it on the ao486 core. an option would be "Tempest X3" on the PSX core (but first you need to reach a score of more than 500'000).

or wait for the SEGA Saturn core to be released (Tempest 2000 runs already but has issues with the vector graphics).

Tempest X3 on PS1 is a bad port unfortunately and not faithful to the original Tempest 2000.
it was not programmed by YAK and they changed gameplay heavily
Also the controls are very laggy in comparison to the Jaguar and DOS release.

as I have written in my Tweet, there's a hidden Tempest 2000 mode in Tempest X3.

I don't think that T2K on PC supported 4 button joysticks. My guess is that the game only supported gameport joysticks with 2 buttons and you had to press a key (e.g. Space) in order to use the Zapper.

@Chris23235 seems to be right:

and BTW: according to the credits in the manual, T2K for DOS/Windows also was not coded by YAK...

@mikeboss: the DOS version is the more faithful version to the original Jaguar.
YAK was really pissed off by the PS1 port, read here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20091026182 ... a/tx3.html
PS: cannot speak about the Saturn port as I didn't play it.
The most annoying thing of the PS1 port is that the controls are not as tight as DOS or Jaguar, they feel laggy.
@Chris23235: that is what I thought but on the DOS manual ( which is different from WIN95), there is no mention about pushing a separate button for jumping. I tried to push many buttons while having jump enabled and didn't sort any effects....
I will try to install gravid pro drivers then and see what happens....

yeah, I feel you (I own 3 ATARI Jaguars because of T2K and a SONY PVM). AFAIK, the SEGA Saturn port is considered as pretty decent. I haven't had the opportunity to test myself on Saturn. T2K starts on the latest beta of the upcoming Saturn core, I can start to "play" but the web and enemies is all one gray area. patience...

I downloaded the Gravis utilility for their gamepads and I could make some tests in realtime. Button 3 and 4 are only recognized if you choose on the OSD menu "2 Sticks" instead of "2 Joysticks"
Not sure the difference but now I can play Tempest 2000 properly with an arcade joystick.
To me it's the second best version after the Jaguar one
