New Analog Pro 9.2 can't Sync to RGB

Unread post by Slypty »

So I've got the new Analog PRO V9.2 and excited to get going, I bought a generic Saturn SCART cable. This is my 2nd MiSTer, the first I sold and this is all new equipment.

I've been able to use HDMI and Update_All. I had the prior configuration with the VGA Analog I/O board MiSTer.ini file which I basically just dropped on to the new SD Card. I also followed the advice on the MiSTeraddons site explaining how to Sync:[MiSTer]
forced_scandoubler=0
vga_mode=rgb
composite_sync=1
vga_sog=0

So my screen just vertically scrolls on the OSD screen fuzz and looks darker than it should. Nowhere in the .ini settings is there a vga_mode.
I've tried two different Video>modes (for CRTs) and both act the same way.
I don't get it.. it's the same tested and working INI that I was using with a SCART cable (over the VGA port) from the older Analog I/O board, which should be the same pinout anyways so I'm discouraged. Anybody know?

Just confirming I did try to add
vga_mode=rgb
manually to the .ini and still same issue

Just for giggles have you tried

Code: Select all

vga_sog=1

I don't remember needing that on my old board but I initially had the same problem as you and that happened to be the first thing I tried and it was successful.

Of course, YMMV.

Thanks for the tip, I don't think SoG=1 is necessary unless you're using it. I did try it however and had no change.
Sorta seems like I have no Sync, even though my SCART cable tests good for pin 20. I'll have to inspect the Analog Board for a fault somehow.

Figured it was worth a shot.

I went back to my old analog IO because barely any of the arcade cores I use actually work on my CRT using the 9.2 board and the one I bought doesn’t have the 18/24bit switch.

Which did you buy? The 9.2 should have a switch to toggle colors.

I realized that my BeeLink PC or maybe Windows 11 doesn't allow for two files with the same name on the root of the SD, even if they're used by different programs. When you format with Mr. Fusion, a 'MiSter' file is place for config reasons, not for .ini settings. The PC sees this and brings up an error message when you try to input 'MiSTer.ini' as your ini file.

So to get around that I had to use my Windows 7 PC, which had no problems with the dual names. Also, the formatting with Balena Etcher and Mr. Fusion is seemless on Windows 7, Windows 11 usually brings up an error.

Anyways after all that I now have an OSD on the screen but the picture still rolls. I've only heard good things but for the life of me I can't see what could be causing this issue. My CRT doesn't have a V.Hold control, if I use my Famicom it syncs just fine, so I'm not sure if the CRT just doesn't like the sync pulse from the MiSTer or what.

I got the official 9.2 board with the daughter board. It does not have a switch.

Maybe it's just the PRO version with the toggle

I'll try to use the direct video method for now. I can sync to another CRT through direct vid but only at 480p for now.

If I use a VGA to SCART cable, is the pinout the same as the older version Analog I/O VGA?

Pro is just what misteraddons calls their version of the reference board and they include a 18/24bit toggle. I didn't/don't want to deal with the Saturn AV cables and that's the tradeoff I guess.

ETA- I'm assuming they used the 9.2 as a reference for their design and added some QoL things like the 18/24 toggle.

I'm regretting the Saturn cables. I had no issues with the VGA output and have a homemade SCART cable that worked great.

Using the HDMI with a VGA dongle works on my GVM @ 240p, but using that same SCART cable to my main CRT which doesn't use VGA, I get a scrambled signal. Even though I have the same INI, so my only guess is the pinout of the VGA once it goes through the HDMI is different than the older I/O boards. That or my Analog I/O is actually defective.

I’ve read that not all Saturn cables are created equal. I think RetroRGB has a good video or write up on the subject. Did you get your cable from misteraddons?

Here is the page, but it doesn't look like the same problem. However I think he is talking output from a Saturn. May still be worth a shot.

If you have trouble with your existing RGB SCART cable, try adding a 220uF capacitor and a 470ohm resistor to the sync line on your RGB SCART cable. Alternatively, you can order a cable that uses luma as sync, but that might have compatibility issues with some setups.

Hm.. I did add a 470ohm resistor but forgot the 220uF cap. Don't think that would be fix though, I should at least have sync. The cable's kinda cheap but, I did check that all pins correspond to the correct pinout, so the proper signals should be sent anyway.

The MiSTer.ini setup while using MiSTer is confusing me. I have my INI's listed as:
MiSTer.ini
MiSTer_alt_1.ini
MiSTer_alt_2.ini
MiSTer_alt_3.ini
MiSTer_alt_4.ini

When I use the MiSTer, the OSD page that shows the available INI's to select from, always comes in this Order:
Main
ALT1
ALT3
alt_ (?) Can't read the rest, goes out of the screen)

The oddity is only the alt(?) will work as a 15Khz signal that my GVM Monitor will accept and display on my CRT. This is over direct vid/HDMI to Analog. I try to reorganize the files on my SD Card to figure out which one is the alt(?) but the menu on the MiSTer always comes out the same way, no matter which way I order the files. So I have no idea which file is the working one lol.

Grab a spare SD card and make a complete new install on it, with a fresh mister.ini from this page: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_Mi ... MiSTer.ini
Then apply the .ini changes advised for this setup (since MisterAddons 9.2 page redirects to the Wiki, I assume it's probably only composite_sync=1)

Only this way you will know the software side is ok, and doesn't have some residue from your old configs.

I took that advice and tried it, but nope still a rolling screen.
I have 2 Sony ProFeels I'm trying to sync to. When I adjust the .ini video_mode to:
video_mode = 512, 384, 60
I can get Sync/stop rolling through the Analog Saturn output but only to my Sony KX-1901A.

My main setup is a KV-2900 ProFeel monitor. If I use the video_mode = 512, 384, 60, it still doesn't sync.

This wasn't a problem until I upgraded the Analog I/O. The problem is if I return it they'll probably say ' it works fine' but, apparently it isn't compatible with my CRT for some reason.

Before installing the new A/V Pro v9.2 did you changed DE10-nano all SWs to OFF? I believe for new v9.2 you need to do that.

Make sure you set SW to off and try again.

I bought a generic Saturn SCART cable.

I would start by getting a reputable cable.

I think there's a confusion here in this thread between Analog PRO and A/V PRO 9.2 (the official 24-bit card). These are two different boards from different manufacturers. On the A/V Pro 9.2 we have kept the standards with the more robust VGA port and compatible with all previous cables made. There's no point in promoting the exchange and sale of cables when the previous ones are perfect.

Not possible to have a switch since we have a dedicated DAC.
The cores that miss framework implementation are the Jotego, that he is working when back from vacations.
Btw the cores that are still to be implemented are Jotego's, which is planned for when he returns from holiday (august). All the cores in mister-devel are ready.

The MiSTeraddons site shows that the Switches should be all Off, unless you want to have hifi Analog Audio (which I do), switch 4 should be on in this case. That is for the Analog PRO version only v9.2.

It's difficult to believe that the Saturn cable is at fault, I've ensured that the pinout is correct, continuities check out, there's a 470 ohm resistor and 220uF cap in line with pin 20. I'd be terribly disappointed if I returned the Analog I/O Board only to find that it was because of an inferior cable.

Rick can you clarify this: "On the A/V Pro 9.2 we have kept the standards with the more robust VGA port and compatible with all previous cables made. There's no point in promoting the exchange and sale of cables when the previous ones are perfect."

Code: Select all

Which previous cables are you referring to? I've only ever used the Analog I/O and those cables won't cut the mustard on the Saturn port.

Unfortunately I ended up returning the Analog PRO V9.2 as I couldn't get it to Sync on two monitors that happily Sync to anything else I throw at it. I'll probably end up exchanging to for the new IO Direct board.
