Booting MVS game - only getting Cross Hatch Test

I have these files in the NEOGEO dir:
000-lo.lo
gog-broken-romsets.xml
gog-romsets.xml
neo-epo.sp1
popbounc.zip
romsets.xml
sfix.sfix
sp-s2.sp1
uni-bios.rom
I am trying to get Pop n Bounce working. Core setting are - System Type: Arcade(MVS); BIOS: UniBIOS; Video Mode: NTSC; Input Spinner. I've mapped A,B,C and Start / Coin to the spinner buttons (Ultimate Spinner PRO). However, when I load the game ROM I just get Cross Hatch Test screen. Pressing B to do soft reset just goes to black screen. Anyone know what the issue might be?
As a side note, today I just did an update_all. I had never used this core before so don't know if it ever worked on my setup.

What’s the date on the core?
I think those are the wrong format but I could be wrong.
The ones I used had a FPGA file in them. I switched to .neo since then because it worked better with tapto and remote

Core date is 24.04.18. If the issue is the game ROM - any idea where I can get a compatible version?

you want as set in .neo or a set called the darksoft set. Standard Mame will not work. Legend tells of an Internet Archive that has all of this.

Look on archive.org htgdb-gamepacks for a .neo version of Pop 'n Bounce.
You will also want to make sure you are playing in AES Console Mode. Very rarely should you be playing games in MVS Arcade Mode. There are only a handful of games that require MVS mode to work. I've tested all NEO GEO games for their working compatibility. You can follow my MiSTer Organize project to get all your files in their proper places.

OK, I found the darksoft set, but loading the ROM just displays a white screen now. System type is set to Console(AES), tried with BIOS set to Original and UniBIOS but still only getting the white screen.

Game ROM content looks like this:
Code: Select all
- NEOGEO
- popbounc
- crom0
- fpga
- m1rom
- prom
- srom
- vroma0

Got it working now. The darksoft set is no use unless you convert to .neo files.
Apparently, to get the spinner working with Pop n' Bounce you need to change the Hard Dip Controller setting from Joystick to Paddle in the "Setting Up The Hard Dip" screen. I can get to that screen, but it is not obvious how to change the settings. Does anyone know how?

Also, is it best to plug the spinner into a different USB socket than the USB joystick? Will the MiSTer remember the config for each separately that way?

I don't think you can...there are no DIPs wired up.
However, if you use UniBIOS, you ought to be able to change the same DIP settings from within UniBIOS itself.
