HD Support for WB 2.04 and 1.3.3?

Unread post by SuperFrog »

Hi, ever since I had original HD on Amiga, I always like to have one retro setup for both 1.3.3 and 2.04. Both of those Amigas (Amiga 500 and Amiga 500+ had additional HD added to the side of amiga, sometimes also including additional memory. My original HD was wooping 20 MB.

From settings on minimig core, I see only support for A600 / A1200 EDI interface. Is there a possibility to add A500 support?

Thanks!

You can fake it - use a modified Kickstart 1.3 that supports the A600 IDE controller.

this is what I did .. I wanted to mimic my old original A500 setup with WB 1.3 and an external SCSI hard drive .. this nearly perfectly replicates that .. save for the fact the drive is IDE not SCSI as the Amiga sees it but that point is generally irrelevant ..

Very relevant different though. Its two different drivers for IDE and SCSI and the hardware is different as well.

The custom 1.3 ROM needs to have IDE support added to it. I have tried this and it does work, I can boot into WB 1.3 using a 1.3 ROM with that extra driver added following a guide I found on how to create that ROM.

Is this possible to do with 2.04 as well?

Do all 2.05 have IDE built in?

Yes but the end user experience is nearly 100% identical to how I had my old A500 with scsi sidecar hard drive .. my only regret is not having an image backup of that hard drive contents .. but I redid it from memory .. what apps, games etc

Ahh, I thought you meant you had a ROM with SCSI support instead of IDE support somehow.

There sure is something nice about having the original setups. I spent a while backing up all my old save disks and Deluxe Paint IV save disks. Its nice looking at all the old stuff and remembering where you left off, the things that had been done, the when you made those save games, images or animations. Good times :)

Btw. since I have setup WB 1.3 a few times, both because some games run better with the old OS, especially some of the early Gold Box games from SSI, but also because I have an Amiga CDTV setup where I have not installed a ROM switcher yet.

So I have looked into what can be done with WB 1.3 to enhance it in different ways. One thing worth looking into is JST an alternative to WHDLoad that works with WB 1.3, but it still benefits from having 2MB CHIP RAM and some FAST RAM as well.

With WB 1.3 its still best to load the games with a HD installation, and some games might not have its own HD installer but its still possible to make them run from a HD if you manually copy the files and put some files and some of them needs to go in libs folders and such.

There are apps with support for WB 1.3 as well. I can recommend looking through this thread:
https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=52283

Some apps I can recommend:
Directory Opus DOpus 4.12 can also run on WB 1.3. This list mentions Directory Opus 4.37, not sure why but 4.12 is a version I remember as being the one to get, but I guess newer ones might also work.

REdit: A text editor I like to use. SysInfo 3.24 is nice for benchmarking, 4.x requires newer ROMs. My favorite painting / animation program is Deluxe Paint IV and it works in 1.3 as well. Otherwise all the archive utilities are probably worth adding, like zip, arj, LHA, LZ and so on and I think its worth looking into the different menu apps that can add popup menus and add custom menus to the WB 1.3 menu bar. There is also several icon utilities.

One special menu I will recommend is AmiDock. Its not the same as in AmigaOS 3.9, but its pretty nice for WB 1.3:

Instant Music by Electronic Arts has no WHDLOAD slave and its from the A1000 era .. so it only works with chipram .. and no more than 512kb .. and 1.3 max .. its a fun (all be it simple) music "game-thing" .. you put fastram in the system and Instant Music will crash.

I’ve compiled the share file system for workbench 1.3 too which might be useful…

Would there be any interest in a script that automatically patches kickstart to include the correct driver?

Definitely interested in this, I have yet to set up my WB 1.3 from back in the day; HD support would be great.

Yes, please.

I am looking @ getting HstWB scripts to create A1200 setup. Not sure how this will work with Minimig (or if it will work)

Is it possible to use second sd card (one on IO BOard) for minimig?

I know you did not ask me, but I do have a bit of input that might help. Personally I have the share folder on a USB disk, not sure if the second SD card can be used, but if not the second SD card could be put in a USB SD Card reader and be accessed that way and be used to store the Amiga ROM images, ADFs, HDFs, shared folder and so on.

That is actually good idea, it might be a good use for 1TB external disk that I have, but wonder if I should get bigger power supply, as HD works off USB power. I have couple that have external power. So many options. :)

Thank you!

No, 2.05.299 has no ide support
You ideally want 2.05.350 as that has support for larger disks.

I tried with a 2.5" external HDD, and I suspect it did not get enough power from the MiSTer even though it has a powered USB hub, so I got an external 1tb Samsung SSD. 1.8" so its about half the size physically as the 2.5" HDD. That has worked quite well for me so far, and I try to use this disk for my emulation stuff overall, so I have some PCem and ScummVM on that as well.

Early on I had gotten 128gb and 256gb microSD cards with a good speed, so I only had to use the SD card, but since its possible to use USB I have begun doing that for all the core and it has a lot of benefits I think because it will have less reads and writes on the SD card. I had a 128gb that... shorted or something. A problem with Sandisk SD cards sometimes it seems. So it just gets hot when trying to use it and cannot be accessed in any way. This way a 16gb SD card is more than enough for the MiSTer and it would not even have to be fast since its only the cores that are loaded from it and the MiSTer Main. But its still class 10.

I just noticed that one of my 2.05 has HD in it, but rom version is 37.300, not 37.350. Will test this rom tonight.

I actually have extra 500GB SSD that is not used. I have couple options to connect to USB. (single cable as well cradle). Do you just format partitions as fat32? This should help in moving data to and from MiSTer, as well should help with longevity of micro SD cards.

Thank you both!

IIRC 37.300 has a 40MB limit on hard disks, you'd be much better of sourcing the 37.350 rom.

Can someone PM me where you can get AGS packs? I am testing between ClassicWB Full, Advanced and P96 versions with 3.1.4, but did not define which one will be main Amiga setup. 2.04 and 1.3.3 are just nostalgia for machines that I still love to this day. 20MB hd back in day was huge... :)

Finally went around and patched kickstart 1.3 with ide from 3.1 and managed to create 200MB HDF with 2 partitions on it and boot on MiSTer. This took some work, and yes, scripting patching would benefit those willing to emulate 1.3 with A590 HD back from end of 80s.

Good afternoon! I patched the kick13 and got 512 kb rom. I created a 64 mb hd image (yes very small) and booted my Mister from A590Setup disk. I followed the instructions (https://www.fpgaarcade.com/kb/how-to-bo ... he-replay/). But the hd drive icon shows DH0:DOS... and the "Hard Disk Prep" tool stops with "Error -1 on device open! Attempting to prep the hard disk failes. Check your hardware and try again." I tried same configuration with WINUAE but same results. What did I do wrong?

@McBrain,

Just tried the tuto from your link and I do confirm that this procedure works like a charm. I was able to boot on the 20Mb HDD that I created a while ago with WinUae by using the A590 extension with the Kick1.3 patched.
Just some comments on the procedure but I guess that you found it.
When you're in the cli section:
The point 1>getsci needs to be getscsi (this is a typo error)
The point 2>gpatch kick34005.A500 kick34005.A500.gpatch kick34005.A500_patched : you of course have to replace kick34005.A500 by the name of the KICK1.3 ver 34005 that you have downloaded (mine for instance is KICK13.ROM, so kick34005.A500 becomes KICK13.ROM)

I do not know if this a authorized to share the KS1.3 patched here, if someone can answer yes, I can share it with you.

But again, this procedure works, if it doesn't work on your side, I'll bet on a wrong KS1.3 or a syntax error in the cli.

@kathleen,

Thank you for your hints! So you got it running at MisterFPGA ?

I extracted scsi.device [40.12 (21.12.93)] and my kick 1.3 rom [34.2 (28 Oct 1987)] seem to be good.

I retried the steps and cannot get the A590Setup running.

I own the real A1200 and A500 with those kickstart versions so this would not be a licence issue in case for a download.

@McBrain,

Yes, I got it running at the MisterFPGA with the Minimig core in A500 config (68000+512kb+ocs/ecs)

Ok fine, will PM you with my Kick patched.

My A600 (non HD) has 37.300 and takes a 2GB CF card without issues. Single partition, all space is available. Only difference between 37.300 and 37.350 is the hard drive seek time which is longer on the 350 ROM, so that it can easier detect a slow starting drive.

You should change to 37.350, you will suffer corruptions long term.
Check into it, 37.350 added support for drives larger than 40GB.

Hi! I have been followed the instructions in https://www.fpgaarcade.com/kb/how-to-bo ... he-replay/ and I created an 1.3 Kickstart with IDE boot support (I can boot IDE disks with it).

However, as it happened to @McBrain, I am also getting the error in "Hard Disk Prep" that says:

Code: Select all

Error -1 on device open! Attempting to prep the hard disk failes. Check your hardware and try again.
Can you lend a hand? What did you do to correct that error???

If I follow the howto exactly, I must do:

Code: Select all

execute prephd drive 0
But that always returns

Code: Select all

EXECUTE: parameters unsuitable for key ""
...which sounds like theres a typo on the howto.
