Kirby's Dream Land 3 - freezing on latest SNES core?

Unread post by zazaza »

Hello, I tried to play Kirby's Dream Land 3 and it freezes in the intro screen to the very first level.

Tried two different rom copies, same issue. The roms work on my Analogue Super NT and snes9x emulator on PC.

Maybe a bug in the latest SNES core? (i ran update all this week) I've never had a game freeze like that in the SNES Mister core.

(Even Rendering Ranger is playable now! It used to not boot)

Tested no-intro roms (USA and Japan), with last core version freezes before first level, however works perfectly with 20240408 version.
The best thing to do would be to open an issue on GitHub (https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/SNES_MiSTer/issues).

Are you guys testing with the 20240919 core? I just tried and I can't reproduce the issue. I'm able to play the first level just fine.

I did notice that a new unstable release for the core just dropped today in the Discord. Maybe try that one and see if it works?

Also what hardware are you guys using? Standard DE-10 Nanos or are you using the MiSTer Pi or QMTech clone boards?

It was just brought to my attention that there was apparently a broken build of the 09192024 release that made it's way to update_all temporarily and it broke SA-1 games.

If you delete the core from your MiSTer and then re-run update_all (or download the latest core manually from github), that should fix this issue.

I've updated again and with the new downloaded core (v240919) I still have the same issue. The game freezes before first level.
Deleted snes.cfg and same behavior again.
I have also tried with the unstable version (v240925) and the game doesn't boot, all I have is a black screen.
My mister is a standard DE-10 Nano.
Maybe is a ram issue? (mine is sdram 128mb v2.9)

Thank you both.

mambrino - same for me. SNES_20240408.rbf works, SNES_20240919.rbf does not.

italiangrandma - manually deleted SNES_20240919.rbf, manually installed SNES_20240919.rbf from github, problem persists. deleted core and ran update all, problem in SNES_20240919.rbf persists.

super mario RPG also running slowly and erratically.

using de10-nano, not a clone from 2024, never had problems with snes core until now.

Hmmm, ok, Zazaza, how about you try deleting the core again and then running update_all to get the core? My bad, I see that you did try that

Mambrino, did you install the core manually or via update_all? If you did it manually, you should also try deleting the core and then running update_all to get the latest.

EDIT: Also, if neither of those options work, can you try downloading the latest unstable core from here - https://github.com/MiSTer-unstable-nigh ... 133960.rbf

Thanks for testing & helping, italiangrandma.

SNES_unstable_20240925_133960 - KBDL3 glitches & fully crashes during intro screen to first level. Super Mario RPG goes to black screen upon pressing start.

I'll just stick to SNES_20240408.rbf until this is (hopefully) solved. My guess is there was a regression when fixing the core for Mario Maker & Rendering Ranger, but idk.

Any chance you both are in the MiSTer Discord or could join so we can test with you there? This is definitely an odd issue that we haven't seen being reported.

Can either of you guys check the CRC-32 hash of your file and report back what it is? Just to verify that the correct version is definitely being used? It's interesting because your errors match what a couple other users saw with the messed up build that went out a on the 19th.

I'm also experiencing freezing with KDL3 with the 20240919 core. I deleted the core and ran update_all again but still have the problem. I'm using a DE10-Nano and 128MB SDRAM version 3.0.

Works fine for me; MiSTer v240912 / SNES v240919. On both DE10-Nano and QMTech board with onboard SDRAM.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 (USA).sfc (EC8A48F6).

@mambrino - would you be able to test if CPU set to "turbo" in the SNES core crashes for you in SNES_20240919.rbf? Crashes for me in Gradius 3.

"Turbo" in SNES_20240408.rbf (Gradius 3) works for me.

Anyway, thanks for your help so far, i'll probably open a new Github issue.

yes, gradius 3 with turbo enabled crashes for me too, black screen before menu.

where do you get your sram module? I bought mine from bitfunx (XS-DS v2.9 128mb), a Chinese customer, and I have doubts about whether it could really be a problem with my ram, the only thing that makes me doubt is that I don't have any problem with other cores and it also passes all the RAM tests.

If you have not done so already, test your SDRAM with the MemTest core.

This combination works without issues on my Taki RAM Kit, too.

The game has a save feature, does it not? You could try deleting the save file (in saves/SNES) in case it has been corrupted or there is an incompatibility with the new core. Just a thought.

The "CPU: Turbo" setting is also broken in this release, so perhaps it is related.

mambrino - I have 2 modules (v2.9, v3.0). both purchased from Misteraddons.com. Both feature Alexey Melnikov copyright, both made in 2021.
i swapped my v2.9 ram with v3.0, same issue remains. i reverted to v2.9. agree, i do not think it's the ram, i thankfully have no other issues with any other games or cores (and had no issues with the SNES core until now with the latest release).

angelicliver - v2.9 ram running stable at 146 mhz in memtest (ran for 10 minutes at 147, now it's 146)

My v3.0 RAM module was purchased from misterfpga.co.uk last year. I ran MemTest for 30 minutes and it stayed at 142 MHz.

I also downloaded the older 20240408 version of the SNES core and it doesn't freeze, unlike the 20240919 version.
